Light Up a Life
Monday, November 24th marks the kick-off for the first annual “Light Up a Life” Holiday lights fundraising campaign for Jubilee Residences Foundation. With the flip of a switch, beautiful evergreens located on the grounds of Porteous Lodge and in front of the offices of Jubilee Residences on Taylor Street will simultaneously light up with 20,000 LED lights. Over the next few weeks, volunteers will be out selling the lights in the hope of raising upwards of $150,000.
For almost 60 years, Jubilee Residences has provided excellent care and support to the older adult. Jubilee operates two long-term care facilities; Porteous Lodge and Stensrud Lodge. It also offers affordable housing for the older adult in Eamer Court, Mount Royal Court and Cosmopolitan Court. While medical care and basic support are important, Jubilee Residences also aims to provide a nurturing atmosphere for residents.
“Providing that kind of care costs money,” says Jubilee Residences Foundation Board Chair Jack Ostoforoff. “While Government funding is appreciated, it only covers basic services. It doesn’t cover the cost of most equipment, furnishings or enhancements to the living environment.”
A bulb can be purchased for $10 or 3 for $20. This year’s proceeds from “Light Up a Life” will go toward the construction of sunrooms at both Porteous Lodge and Stensrud Lodge. “It will provide another place for our residents and their friends and family to gather and enjoy year-round,” says Jack.
You may wish to purchase a bulb in memory of a loved one or you may wish to honour someone special in your life. “We hope people will also consider expressing their gratitude to care providers, teachers, babysitters and others by purchasing bulbs in their names,” says Jack.
To support “Light Up a Life,” visit us at Market Mall every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday beginning November 26th to December 20th. Or you can purchase a Christmas bulb by dropping by Jubilee’s offices at #25-2602 Taylor Street East, or at Porteous and Stensrud Lodges.
The trees will be lit from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. daily. The “Light Up a Life” campaign will wrap up January 10th.
